Avoiding nature loss in the Katingan Peatlands, Indonesia
The Katingan Peatlands project protects 157,000 hectares of land (it's the largest carbon project in the world!) that is also home to hundreds of people and endangered animals and is an ongoing source of jobs for women in the surrounding communities.
The Katingan Peatland Restoration project in Indonesia protects and restores a peat swamp ecosystem that is twice the size of New York City reducing 7.5 million tonnes of C02e each year, but it also does so much more. The project integrates into 34 local villages to support the traditional livelihoods of 400 residents and protects the habitats of 44 endangered or vulnerable species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and flora.
