Preserving urban forest on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN
This project preserves 58 acres of pine-oak forest in the historic St. Elmo neighborhood of Chattanooga, Tennessee that is an important wildlife corridor and habitat and links trail systems together to improve community access to the land.
The St. Elmo Forest Preservation project on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee provides a home for hundreds of species of wildlife and protects 58 acres of pine-oak forest. Located in the city area of Chattanooga, the project ensures connectivity between habitat corridors and provides essential wildlife habitat for several species, including eastern box turtles, red-tailed hawks, black bears, and zigzag salamanders. Additionally, this project has a positive impact on water quality and helps further recreation opportunities for surrounding communities by linking St. Elmo at the base of the mountain to the existing trail system that is otherwise difficult to access without a vehicle.
